And run
And throw,
And don't make provisions for your garden beyond the bare minimum, there are some crops that do well.
Dry beans on the vine:
Peppers waiting to ripen to red or orange or, in this case, yellow.
Popcorn drying on the stalk.
Hard-shelled winter squash, now ready to be made into pies or custard or pancakes. . .
But summer squash? Well, not so happy, as it turned out. The chickens liked this 30" monster just fine, though. I'm torn between ripping out the plant and waiting to see if I can coax out just one or two more reasonable squashes.

I have a two week trip planned next summer. I'm thinking about timing the plantings so things like cukes and zukes will just start fruiting when I get home. It will be interesting to see how things work out.
Daphne, that would be so much smarter. I suppose if I'd put a great watering timer and made sure a real gardener would come in it would have helped. Your trip, I hope, will be worth all the hassle.
Did your frisbee playing kids win at least? I've been out myself for 2 weeks because of an infection to my foot. Thank god for helpers who at least keep the place watered...
Heiko, they won enough to seriously impress teams made up of all 17 and 18 year olds. Our team was very young with many 12-14 year olds. And short. They came in 4th of 8.
We took 2 trips not too far about but gardening has not been the same and God willing will be leaving again. for a stint. Things are still growing thankfully and I want to rip out, prune, etc but I have decided to let the yard do the wild thing and i play the role of forager.
Yay, pumpkins! LOL I've been waiting patiently to see signs of fall so thank you for that photo :)
