What ails the beans?

Last week, I noticed some bean leaves appeared to have been sprayed with metallic paint. At least, that's the first thing that popped into my head. They looked a little like these bronzed leaves:

And here are some unhappy looking pole bean leaves.

After doing some research, I fear that it's mosaic virus, because they're primarily saved seeds. But maybe it's a nutritional deficiency? Who knows? I'm such a lackadaisical gardener that it could be almost anything.

But all is not grim, disease-and-fungus-related news here at this Sicilian Sister's house. Look! Baby baby cucumbers. These are the kind that Trader Joe's sells in little boxes for lots of money. They make excellent snacks, being fully ripe at about five inches.

And this year's experiment: black popcorn. I've seen many tassels, but not much flying pollen, so I'm just at the finger-crossing state.

And finally, what do you think the plural noun should be for summer squash? An enthusiasm? An overwhelm? Pick 'em young, at any rate!

The bean problem could be spider mites, they make the leaves look stippled and bronzed. The love to attack my bean plants almost every year. They are almost impossible to see without a hand lens so I don't notice them until my plants are looking bad.

Are those the little Persian cucumbers? They are good!

An overwhelm of squash - sounds good to me... sort of

What's with our pole bean problems this year? Shall we blame it on the Bermuda grass, LOL?

I think I'll have an exuberance of squash this year.

Michelle, that's possible. I'll use my new fancy hand lens.

Yes, Persian. Such a treat, and I have three thriving plants.

AG, Let's blame everything on the Bermuda grass! I think you always have an exuberance of everything.

I can't wait for baby cukes. We have had such cool weather in June that they aren't growing very fast, but at least they haven't up and died on me like last year.

Erin, I'm sort of on that side of the fence. I've planted more than I needed. Guess the food bank will get some, too. Or powdery mildew will take over!

Daphne, you have had a cool start. At least we're having some morning fog. I have no doubt you'll be rolling in them soon.

When I think of squash I think of bags of produce handed over a fence between neighbors.

Therefore I propose a generosity of summer squash.

My beans did that last year, some of the leaves got brittle and looked ugly, but the beans pumped out like crazy.

Jill, part of these beans were planted in honor of the dill/rosemary beans. I sure hope they do well. We liked those a lot.

I love the look of the patty pan squash. So far I have no had an abundance of zuchinni in previous years. I just wish they would all mature at a slower rate with just a few a week! Nancy

I threw a couple of sunburst patty pan squash into the garden this year and now I am thinking... what were you thinking?! LOL! They produce a huge amount of produce and I have two of them growing PLUS the regular zucchini. They have not started laying it on yet, but I know the day is coming. I am with Michelle in that I would check the beans for spider mites.
